A “Sea in the Sky” and a Giant Whale Fountain
One summer, the rooftop Sky Garden of a high-rise complex in Osaka hosted the water-play event “Sky Ocean.”
The theme was simple: “Let’s play in an ocean that appeared in the sky!” With sweeping views from 300 meters above ground, visitors could enjoy water blasters and cooling mist—perfect for a hot summer day.
The biggest attraction was the event’s whale mascot. A fountain shot up as high as 10 meters from its back, and children’s cheers echoed across the garden.
An Unexpected Role for a Tough Industrial Nozzle
What powered this impressive fountain was actually one of IKEUCHI’s spray nozzles.
This nozzle is normally used in demanding industrial applications such as flue gas cooling and dust suppression at waste treatment facilities.
This time, however, one of those “tough-guy” nozzles was mounted on the back of a cute whale, helping bring smiles to children’s faces.
The contrast was so striking that the sales representative in charge said, “I never imagined I’d see this nozzle used in a setting like this.”
Behind the Smiles — A Sales Rep’s Ingenuity
Simply spraying water 10 meters into the air would have left the floor soaking wet when it came back down.
So the challenge was to create “just the right mist” — mist that would disperse properly in the air and remain comfortable for visitors.
To achieve this, he carefully evaluated the nozzle’s spray angle, pressure, and flow rate to select the optimal model. He then carried out an upward spray test at the factory—something rarely done in the harsh industrial environments where the nozzle is normally used—recorded the test on video, and shared it with the organizing team.
Through repeated testing and fine-tuning, he arrived at a result everyone was satisfied with.
The Smiles Will Continue Next Year — and Beyond
The fountain was a big hit with children and was also well received by the organizer. Following that success, our products were selected for use again at next year’s event.
