Experiencing Fog at Expo 2025 Osaka: A Day of Inspiration, Culture, and Innovation
This summer, I had the opportunity to visit Yusai, one of Ikeuchi’s valued customers, located in the forested area of Arashiyama, Kyoto. Nestled among the hills and rivers that make Arashiyama one of the city’s most visited districts, Yusai provides visitors with a chance to experience traditional Japanese dyeing techniques in a beautifully preserved setting. Arashiyama itself is known for its bamboo groves, historic temples, and seasonal foliage, attracting both domestic and international tourists. Within this busy area, Yusai stands out as a space that combines art, history, and nature in a calm, accessible way.

Yusai was founded by dye artist Yusai Okuda, who has dedicated his career to preserving and modernizing traditional Japanese dyeing techniques. The site was originally a ryokan from the Meiji period, later restored and transformed into a gallery and studio space. Over the years, Yusai has grown into a destination that balances public engagement with preservation, allowing visitors to observe the dyeing process, explore exhibitions, and enjoy the surrounding gardens. The property reflects both Okuda’s artistic vision and careful consideration of historical architecture, making it a unique example of traditional craft in a modern visitor experience.

The gallery and grounds are designed to integrate architecture, gardens, and natural light. Circular windows, reflective tabletops, and water mirrors allow light and greenery to become part of the exhibition, creating a calm and visually engaging environment. Visitors can move through the spaces at their own pace while observing both the dye works and the carefully curated natural surroundings.
The design of the space intentionally frames experiences, from light and shadows to the seasonal changes in the gardens. This careful attention to environmental factors aligns closely with how Ikeuchi approaches controlled humidification and misting.

A key focus of my visit was seeing Ikeuchi’s fog system in operation. The nozzles are placed strategically throughout the property to enhance the ambience without distracting from the art or architecture.
The system is not only aesthetic but functional as well, providing a subtle cooling effect that improves visitor comfort, especially in Kyoto’s intense summer heat. The fine mist blends naturally with the gardens and architectural features, softening light, highlighting greenery, and enhancing the overall visitor experience.
I especially enjoyed observing how the other visitors responded to the fog. Each time the system activated, guests paused and often moved to take photos, visibly excited by the effect. This further proved that the system not only enhances comfort and ambience but also increases engagement, drawing attention to both the exhibits and the natural surroundings.

Visiting Yusai this summer highlighted the role of Ikeuchi’s fog technology in enhancing both the aesthetic and functional aspects of a site. By integrating carefully controlled mist with a historical, artistic environment, Yusai offers visitors a richer, more comfortable experience that complements its traditional dyeing craft.
I encourage anyone visiting Kyoto to add a stop at Yusai to experience it for themselves.
