Challenges Faced by the Customer

At an automotive parts manufacturer’s foundry, casting sand scattering was a major issue.

Castings were removed from sand molds and individual parts were cut from the runners.
During these operations, sand adhering to the castings became airborne as dust, worsening the work environment.

If the situation continued, it could put the plant at risk of non-compliance with occupational safety and health regulations.
The customer therefore approached IKEUCHI, a spray nozzle manufacturer, to discuss a mist-based dust suppression measure.

Solutions Proposed by IKEUCHI

We proposed a fine-mist spray solution to suppress casting sand from becoming airborne.

This approach offers the following benefits:

  • A fine mist forms a barrier around the workpiece, suppressing the scattering of casting sand within the work area.
  • Cooling products without wetting them reduces thermal updrafts generated by hot surfaces, thereby minimizing the rise of sand dust.
  • Targeted local misting suppresses dust in areas where the dust collector cannot fully collect it.

Benefits Achieved

Measurements with a particle counter confirmed that airborne dust was reduced by approximately 20%.
IKEUCHI’s spray solution continues to contribute to maintaining a safe and clean working environment.
