How the Right Spray Nozzle Can Reduce Clogging and Maintenance | Newsletter Vol. 39

Why choose between performance and easy maintenance?

In manufacturing, improving one aspect of a process can sometimes create a trade-off elsewhere.

Higher-temperature processes may require more robust nozzles—but that shouldn’t come at the expense of easy maintenance.

At a PCB equipment manufacturer, the stripping solution needed to be heated to nearly 100°C. Quick-detachable PP nozzles couldn’t withstand the heat, while conventional stainless-steel nozzles would have required operators to unscrew dozens of nozzles during maintenance.

That’s why IKEUCHI developed a stainless-steel nozzle that combines heat resistance with quick-detach maintenance.

What if you could prevent clogging before it starts?

At a starch manufacturing plant, airborne starch dust caused the spray nozzles to clog as often as four times an hour. Each blockage meant stopping the process to clean the nozzle and restore operation.

For this application, IKEUCHI configured the BIMJ Series with a custom purge-air setup to keep starch dust from building up around the exposed nozzle tip.

After installation, nozzle clogging dropped sharply, reducing cleaning and recovery work and enabling more stable moisture conditioning.

When clogging can’t be completely avoided, make cleaning easier.

In steel sheet surface treatment, foreign particles in recycled water can clog nozzle orifices. With multiple spray headers and many nozzles, removing and cleaning them one by one can become a significant maintenance burden.

IKEUCHI’s BRASIKan spray header allows operators to clean the nozzle inlets without removing the nozzles, using an internal brush mechanism. An air-driven version is also available for automated cleaning.

Reducing maintenance isn’t only about cleaning. What if you could simply replace your nozzles less often?

Make Nozzles Last Longer

At a steel sintering plant, spray nozzles used to apply slurry inside a drum mixer wore out after only about 300 hours—requiring the mixer to be shut down for nozzle replacement every month.

IKEUCHI proposed replacing the conventional stainless-steel nozzles with highly wear-resistant alumina ceramic nozzles. After three months of use, no significant deterioration in appearance or performance was observed, confirming that nozzle life had more than tripled compared with the previous model.

Less clogging. Less maintenance. More reliable production.

Prevent clogging. Make cleaning easier—or automate it. Make nozzles last longer. There are many ways to reduce the maintenance burden on the production floor.

The right nozzle choice, design, or configuration can help keep your process running more reliably.
